After picking up their drinks, they gave up on the board games and ventured into the little book corner. Bret exclaimed over the Harry Potter section he found there, and Harry groaned his dismay.

“What?” Bret said. “Surely you like Harry Potter.”

“Um …”

Bret gasped and pressed a hand to his chest. “Oh my God. I’m not sure we can be friends!”

Harry rolled his eyes, shaking his head, but a smile tugged at his lips.

For some reason, Harry was incredibly easy to talk to, even though they seemed to be opposites. They clicked, joking around and even playfully arguing without conflict. Kind of surprising after their initial clashes at the party. But then, once Bret had opened up about the truth behind his feelings, they’d gotten along fine.

“It’s the name, isn’t it?” Bret guessed.

“Yes!” Harry cried. “It’s like being Luke at the height of Star Wars mania. Do you know how many times I’ve been called the Boy Who Lived?”

Bret laughed. “One more time at least. I have to call all my friends and tell them I had coffee with the Boy who Lived.” He frowned. “Although you look more like Malfoy than Harry. Though not so ferret-like, so maybe Cedric. Now, he was hot.”

Bret realized a moment too late that he’d basically just told Harry he was hot. Probably not the best thing to say to keep their interactions in the friend zone. He’d been struggling with that during their entire encounter. Just because he wasn’t great with sex didn’t mean it wasn’t fun to flirt and date. Even kiss. It was everything that led to that got complicated.

“I have no idea who you’re talking about,” Harry said. “Not a fan, remember?”

“You said you weren’t a fan, not that you didn’t read it. Everyone read it!”

“Not me.”

“But the movies. The people who don’t read it, watch it. And let me tell you, those people are missing out because the books are so much better.”

“I’ve seen bits and pieces. I try to avoid them, but it’s difficult in a Potter-crazy world. I’m hoping now that the series has ended, it’ll die down.”

Bret scoffed. “Kind of like Star Wars did, right? Oh wait, they started making all those new movies. Even before then, everyone and their dog had watched the original.”

“Well, that gives me no hope whatsoever.”

Bret grinned, an idea taking shape.

“Listen, Harry. You need to learn an important lesson here,” he said, as he dropped the book and grabbed Harry’s arm to steer him toward the front of the shop. “When you can’t beat it, join it.”

“Okay?”

“We’re going to the bookstore, and I’m buying you a copy of Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone. You will read it, and when you do, you’ll love it. Then you’ll figure out that being Harry isn’t so bad. I’ll lend you my Gryffindor scarf, and you can embrace the jokes.”

Harry’s eyes widened. “Oh my God, I knew that scarf seemed familiar. Is my name the only reason you want to be my friend?”

Bret laughed. “No.”

“Is
